Never before in our living memory have we collectively faced such an adversary! 2020 was a year one cannot forget in a hurry. COVID-19 dominated our lives like no infection has. The impact of COVID-19 was such that time will be remembered as before Corona (B.C.) and after Corona (A.C). It led to unprecedented lockdowns all over the World and humanity was hushed into a corner, trying its best to ward off the menace. The onslaught by the tiny virus made us humans humble. It jolted us to realise that the World order is controlled by tiny invisible microbes and not by superpowers having atomic weapons.
The impact of COVID-19 has been total. It had imposed restrictions on life activities and made us unsure of everything. The impact was colossal not only on the public at large-- but more so on the healthcare staff entrusted with trying to heal and protect all with their eyes blindfolded and hands tied behind their backs. The medical fraternity not only had to treat patients with COVID-19 and prevent serious complications, but also to understand the disease and innovate for better remedies.
Amongst the ruins of lives and jobs lost, one needed to collect one’s senses and move on in the hope of a brighter future. Social distancing, hand hygiene and wearing masks became household phrases. Concepts of online consulting and telemedicine blossomed. Sharing knowledge between peers by online webinars became commonplace.
Slowly and steadily, we made progress against this hitherto unknown enemy. Teams all over the world got down to the business of formulating vaccines which would help us in tackling this novel virus. As 2020 draws to a close, there is light at the end of the tunnel heralded with the advent of potentially effective vaccines. It is a first that we humans have been able to achieve this humongous task of getting a vaccine ready in such a short time.
2020 was a time to sit back and introspect. We clinicians too had a lot to ponder. It is in this context that the Association of Spine Surgeons of India (ASSI) decided to have an essay writing competition with the theme “COVID 19 - Opportunity in the face of adversity.” From the numerous submissions, the awarded ones are being published as an addendum to this editorial to provide us with solace and enthuse us with energy to keep going till we achieve our common goal of defeating this miniscule virus of its nefarious intention.
Adieu 2020 and welcome 2021!
